A Trip of a Lifetime by La Verne Hughes is a fiction Christian book that depicts the story of a young girl named Cheryl Lee with very religious parents. As their only child, Cherl Lee has been overprotected and feels smothered. Her parents mean well; the book starts off with Cherl Lee’s frustration over not being able to “live a normal life.” She grows up feeling very lonely, is introverted, but loves God dearly.  This is her story on her life as she copes with the emotional toll and her inner thoughts of being brought up in an overly protective environment.  Young teens can identify with some of the emotions displayed in the book, such as: fear, uncertainty and low-self esteem.

Finding herself sick after a dance, Cherl Lee passes out while outside getting some fresh air. A kindly truck driver picks her up.  Fearing that he may get in trouble if the girl (being around 22 he guesses) is involved in anything illegal, he drops her off in the dark on the side of the road before his next stop. This was in hopes that she will be able to get some help. Cherl Lee is still passed out. Cheryl Lee awakens in the morning sun to find herself in another place, not of this world – perhaps Heaven?

The author tells the tale of how Cheryl Lee came back from her visit, happy to be back with her family after “The Trip of a Lifetime.” This is a fantasy fiction ride for young believers, namely girls that enjoy a clean, inspiring fiction read.  With attention to detail, the author does a wonderful job of keeping the readers attention. You might find yourself glue to the pages.  Cheryl Lee realizes there is no place like home.
