Before You Say I Do: The Definition of Marriage by Bishop Otis Kenner II Th.D., represents not only the Biblical definition of marriage between (one) man and (one) woman, but also speaks of the covenant of marriage unto God as a ministry. This ministry is God’s design for a couple “in union” upon the Earth. Today, marriage is in great controversy and as the author presents, the “holy union” of marriage is under attack. With that said, it is the author’s intention with this book to not only give a full understanding of marriage, but to build healthy marriages, and give an understanding of the spiritual aspect of marriage as well. His hopes are to instill upon others the need for “keeping the sanctity of marriage in this country sacred.” It is his belief, that until the sanctity of marriage is restored in America, only then, can America be great again!

Designed as an interactive devotional that can be used between a couple, the author takes readers back to square one ~ to reaffirm and build from their “original” covenant which includes Scripture, meditation and revelation breaks and is coupled with an activity and enforcement section in each chapter. He also gives surprising insight into the spiritual tactic that Satan has employed upon men’s perception of God and marriage in this Earth. As such, he helps readers understand that marriage is a covenant relationship that also reflects Christ’s ministry upon the Earth.

Concise, his book presents an easy-to-read, step-by-step perspective of marriage, consisting of the different ministries of marriage: communion, submission, sex, leaving and cleaving and abandoning excess baggage. Within this, he offers hope and advice to struggling marriages, thus shedding light on a necessary component in marriage: balance and a dying to self each and every day. In keeping with the Biblical definition of marriage, he reiterates that the ministry of marriage is unto death (do us part). (Quite different than the worldview of marriage.)

As a sacred union unto God, the author also suggests to those who are considering marriage, to heed a Biblical viewpoint of marriage before saying, “I do.” His advice comes from more than fifty years of marriage and he offers wonderful Biblical advice to those whom are considering choosing a lifelong mate.

Whether you are married, looking to get married or need help in rebuilding your marriage, this book comes highly recommended! This book thoughtfully and Biblically encourages healthy relationships within marriage that will last a lifetime.  Pastors and lay counselors might also suggest this book to those soon to be wed couples that are receiving pre-marriage counseling.

Highly recommended.
