A Holy Walk in the Wicked Woods: A Christian Journey Beyond Homosexuality by Hugh Richardson presents the author’s memoir as he searched to find himself. Set in the backdrop of his upbringing, the culture, and his own desires, the author presents a battling of homosexual thoughts and tendencies – even after conversion to Christ.

The author candidly presents his inner self and the pull of his own will and mind, as he fights a life or death struggle plagued by suicidal thoughts, seductive voices and the dominating homosexual lifestyle that held him captive. After an encounter with the living Christ, his world changed as he traversed from the darkness into Christ’s marvelous light. This is his journey from corrupted to purity and wholeness in Christ.

While this is not an easy read, the reader is kept on the edge of his seat from the Prologue – offering three perspectives before Jesus’ crucifixion: the Pharisaic, Greek, and the main crowd. Jesus addresses each specific group profoundly. For many, this will give an understanding of a small sampling of Christ’s redemptive offer to the entire world. Intriguing to say the least. Then with each chapter the author presents further insight into the dilemma of being dominated by sin, whether it be illicit or legal drugs/pain killers, alcohol, sex, lust, greed, pride, etc. Eye-opening, Richardson highlights scriptural truths that teach his experience of finding truth past sin, and offers readers foundational, biblical, and spiritual truths, which are meant to enlighten the soul, mind, and heart. This book gives deep conviction of what sin is and reveals the truth of salvation beyond head knowledge.

One will find this book deep, reflective and vivid, as the author presents his life in a series of timelines of events spanning from the early 60’s to 2010. Clearly delineating sin, and thus offering a spiritual perspective on life, the author sheds light on the new birth and eternal life offered in Christ.

Each chapter the author presents tools/tips to understanding eternity, and the choice to eternal life, resonate throughout the read. Becoming a new creation in Christ ushers in hope as the Gospel brings an understanding to readers of the significance of the flesh and the spirit that war against each other. Being free from sin, the world, and worldly lusts ushers in this new and higher perspective, one that is holy in God’s sight – and life giving.

A Holy Walk in the Wicked Woods explains the absolute depravity of the human heart from the beginning, as humans are born into the sin nature and without God. One can turn from sin through the power of Christ. This book sheds light on the timeless truth that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The author is an educated, eloquent, and decisive writer, revealing his Christian journey from sin into the truth of Christ as reality. The author is one who has lived the homosexual lifestyle for years, and this book brings a vital revelation for those struggling with homosexuality to the forefront. God led him to the “Truth” of himself and into true identity, and also into comprehension of his own sin.

His hopes in writing such a book is “advocacy and support for folks who accept life is the experience of a citizen of heaven in an alien world.” His life through “repentance and submission” to the Lord Jesus Christ as the Messiah is a wonderful testimony to the transformative power of Christ changing a person into an eternal citizen of heaven. Recommended as a must-read for those dealing with past sins such as homosexuality and/or substance abuse.
