The Diploma Nurse: Her Shining Day, Her Fading Touch by
Jesse Glover Wilson is a captivating and heart-warming memoir of history’s past
as the author tells her journey as a Diploma Nurse in the 1940’s era – as a
“time gone by” in nursing as her career that spanned into the 1970’s. It was a time when hospitals taught nursing
students instead of colleges. It was a
time of expansion for hospitals and a time when infectious disease was rapid,
polio was disastrous and a time when the mentally ill were institutionalized. The author poignantly shares her struggles,
trials and triumphs that encompassed her nursing career that will encourage,
educate and bring insight to an era that has long gone by. Her amazing career spanned over 30 years in
her field culminating into several positions as the Director of Nursing for
several hospitals.
Throughout this time, the author describes how “it was back
then” and the work ethic that she built her nursing career on. The nursing staff was described as underpaid
and overworked, yet Jesse was answering a higher call – God’s call on her life
to minister to the ill: physically, emotionally and spiritually. Her time spent during these years will shock
and amaze you as she explains the vigorous politics from within the hospital
settings and administrators, to include the unethical sexual discrimination that
was prevalent during many hospitals’ growth.
This was a time when hospitals were few and the need for nurses was in
strong demand.
Encouraging and insightful, readers will find this read not
only historic, but speaks of a different time that we can reminisce and gain
appreciation for those who went before us - treading the darkness of an age
that was still not technologically advanced, yet the author persevered in her
endeavors, standing strong in her Christian faith and commitment, being true to
herself, and God. Inspiring, her
calling has a lifetime of memories to share to the nursing community and
beyond. This book is worth the read for
those that appreciate true-life drama that shares the heart of God working
through us. A highly recommended read.
